A ball that hasn't been rubbed is going to stick out like a sore thumb. Why
didn't LaRussa go to the umpire?

I doubt it. Arroyo's road starts, in parks where his team can't
influence the ball or whatever, are just as good as his home starts.
Having just looked at his 2009 home/road splits, hit ERA, WHIP and k/9
rates are almost identical. Even if the Reds habitually provide balls
which aren't rubbed up enough, I don't think Arroyo would get any
advantage in St. Louis, where I can only assume they're meticulous
about rubbing the balls properly and assuring that foreign grip
substances aren't beneficial.

I didn't mean about the balls so much as I meant the pine tar.
