Right. Phillips has come up smelling like a pig on many occasions. You know
Brandon starts to get REAL expensive. As good a player as he is, now would
be an excellent time to deal him off.

You mean right now in March, or sometime during the season? I'd like
to see what Frazier can do first, and then theres always the Rolen
injury history. But yeah, he has to be dealt before 2011. I wonder if
the thought of that eventuality has crossed Phillips mind?

Let's say he's not traded by 2011 (I doubt he will be). Do the Reds
pick up the $12 million option for 2012? How much is a gold glover
with a decent power bat worth at 2B these days? I guess it depends on
what he does in 10 and 11 and whether there's an adequate replacement
waiting. Frazier remains to be seen.

My guess is that Harang and Arroyo are gone after this year. That's
like 23 million off of the books and you still have Chapman, Bailey,
Cueto, Volquez, Wood, Leake and Maloney. If Phillips and Cordero come
off after 2011, that's another 24 million or so. We're possibly
looking at a pretty strong core with a set rotation for a payroll in
the 30-40 million dollar range before even touching free agency.

I think its good bet that Frazier is already penciled in at 2nd for
2011. Jocketty cant be that dumb to keep Phillips around at that
price. Brandon would have to put up some pretty big numbers. I guess
there could always be an extension and a reworked contract, but the
presence of Frazier, his 2009 apprenticeship at second base, and the
length of Rolens contract indicate that Frazier is being groomed for
that spot. A number of other possibilities could increase the chances
of Phillips leaving; if Valaika rebounds at Louisville or if Cozart
hits enough to show that he could make the show...

All that being said, watch as Walt trades Phillips, Leake, and
Boxberger for Orlando Hudson. <knocks on skull>

It will just depend on how much they can test Frazier in 10 and 11 to
see how productive he can actually be and how much Phillips improves.
Frazier's minor league numbers are decent but it's not like he's
tearing it up like a Bruce, Larson or Rosales. I use those 3 name as
an example that minor league success doesn't always translate up, or
at least not quickly. There's also the defensive side of it.
