The only solid block of music will be 5am-5pm. The Reds vacated Florida, I have zero interest. I was surprised how many others feel the same way. As I predicted they have the lowest attendance in the Cactus League. Uncle Bob screwed the pooch, and he knows it. I have been mixing it up with AZ people on the air. Even they admit, of the teams in AZ, the Cleveland/Cincy setup in Goodyear is of least interest. Of course, I'm just as guilty. I didn't attend a single spring training game this year.

Call me stubborn, but I think Harang will have a nice year with 16 or so wins. > Best offensive year overall- Joey Votto Boy, I hope this is Jay Bruce. > Worst decision by Baker- Hitting Stubbs/Cabrera 1-2, but he has no > choice. Baker has a tendancy to be very loyal to guys he percieves as "his guys." The reds are in a position where they have good young talent ready to step in at almost every position on the field. I think Baker will go too long with a slumping regular when somebody is tearing it up at Louisville. > good luck , Cincy..... Yes, indeed.

Second worst will be too many high-pitch starts by Leake and later Chapman. I'll be in the stands tomorrow, so I can get a good first-hand look at the coming apocalypse that apparently is Aaron Harang :)

How does low attendance in 15 march games negatively affect the team enough to offset the obvious benefits of the improved facilities? And lets be honest, the Reds werent really a big draw in Sarasota anway. What did they average there? 5200/game? I talked to an oldtimer at the Goodyear park who told me that he's been watching all the teams in ST for years.. He said low attendance means little because most of the teams had relatively low attendance the first year or 2 after they move to Arizona. It takes awhile for folks to adjust, learn the area during the visit, and spread word-of- mouth back home. Theres always a few stubborn old coots who cant handle change, but they eventually show up. Other Reds fans i talked to who had visited both Florida and Arizona told me the same tale: the facilities in Florida sucked, the weather didnt always cooperate, and the teams in Florida are spread out too widely. The convenience of teams clustered around the Phoenix area meant alot less driving to follow the team. The only out-of-the-way teams were in Tucson and those parks are closing. Every other park is within an hour of Goodyear. I didnt hear a single "why the hell did they have to move all the way out here!". > > I have been mixing it up with AZ people on the air. Even they admit, of the > teams in AZ, the Cleveland/Cincy setup in Goodyear is of least interest. But theyre interested in going to florida to meet watch the Reds? Obviously not. The Goodyear setup is on the west end of Phoenix and is probably the furthest west of the clubs there. The park is about 1 or 2 miles off the interstate. The thing is, there is a crapload of undeveloped land immediately around the park. Theres an airport to one side, and some housing/condo tracts nearby, but theres plenty of adjacent land to build up with shopping, restaraunts, or hotels. There may even be room for a golfcourse. I dont know what plans, if any, the city has for the area. I'll assume they will do something with the land. I didnt visit the Reds practice complex, just the Stadium. Its a short drive away and is a number of ballfields and facilities. People told me it was very nice. They could easily move all of the remaining teams to the Phoenix area. There was definitely alot of undeveloped land to the west of the city > > Of course, I'm just as guilty. I didn't attend a single spring training > game this year. I refuse to believe that someone can be a fan of a team for 40 years and then bail on them just because they move thier spring training facilities. Eventually you'll come around and make the trip out west.

But I'm fortunate to be listening to Welsh {sp} on Popo's show here in the Nati. right now. It sounds like the same thing the say every year...lol. One thing that usually predicts big years, though it shouldn't, is that Aaron and Bronson are in contract years - I look for both to have good years. I'm concerned about the outfielders producing offense this season. Of course I hope for a magic season, having said that, I say 81-81 |
