From: JK Coney on 14 Jan 2010 12:47 Am I the only one that doesn't see this as such a terrible thing? The guy was in chronic pain, and took action so he can come back pain free and play 90% of this season healthy. What would you have done? Of course he should have consulted with the team, if he didn't, but it's over now.

You are probably the only one with that interpretation because most people choose to see reality, not fanciful visions of what ought to be. Beltran is finished as an elite player. His body is deteriorating rapidly, as evidenced by this chronic knee problem. The best you'll see from him in the future is 25 homers, 85 RBI, a .265 BA, and even lazier play in center field. Beltran is already the most overrated outfielder in the game today, considering how many pop flies he allows to drop in front of him due to his playing on the warning track. His inability to chase down outfield flies is only going to get worse. Beltran's five tool days are over; he'll now join the many Mut fans in just being a plain old tool. Incidentally, this surgery issue underscores how the Muts are the most poorly run franchise in MLB. No communication between the front office and the players results in ridiculous stories of internal strife just like this one. It's for reasons like this that the Yankees and their fans consider the Muts a joke. W

Beltran is finished as an elite player. Just a reminder that in 2008, this genius made the exact same pronouncement about Johan Santana, who went on to lead the league in ERA and finish third in the Cy Young balloting.
