From: john smith on 20 May 2010 18:16 Yeah Nix thought he had it and Conrad thought he had caught it because he saw it hit Nix's glove. That doesn't change the fact that Nix's glove was near the top of the wall or if not above the wall when his glove made contact with the ball. It would have been a really nice catch. I still say it was going to be a homerun. For a guy like Conrad to drive a ball the other way that far off Cordero just makes you scratch your head...

I think you have to admit that Cordero has been shaky at times. Save situations are often forgiving. That game vs. St.Louis last weekend is a good example.

Yeah, sure, no doubt about that. Nearly every player has stretches during the season where he's not on his game, and Coco isn't airtight in the 9th right now. On the other hand, saying that "they need a closer" makes me wonder what team some people are watching. The Reds' other relievers outside Rhodes have been unreliable, the defense at shortstop is weak, there's an offensive black hole out in center field, and the bats off the bench include Paul Janish and Miguel Cairo. I worry about ALL of that before I worry about a closer who has averaged 39 saves the last three years and is on pace to save 51 games this year. That's not a bullshit number. If the save chances keep up, Cordero is literally saving games at a rate of 51 for the year. Even accounting for a drop in opportunities, he's almost sure to save 40-plus. This guy ain't the problem.

I love this article by Jim Caple. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=caple/080805 But I agree that there are bigger issues. I wonder how long it will be before Heisey gets a crack at Stubbs' job. I wonder what happens when Dickerson gets back.

Marty and Cowboy (for what it's worth) said it would not have left the yard. Doesn't matter. It would still have been game tied, runner on 2nd and nobody out. |
