My thought(s) is that we see a Dickerson/Gomes platoon (assuming
Johnny signs) or Dickerson/Balentien, which makes some sense. It would
be a huge boost to this team if Bruce has somewhat solved LHP,
otherwise it makes no sense not to also plan on platooning him in RF.

If Dickerson can get on base like he did last year, theres our
leadoff man, which means that Dusty will bat him 8th.

I cant see Heisey going North (and then East) unless the
organization believed they could get him enough playing time or that
he had nothing left to improve upon in AAA. So its unlikely that he
gets the 4th or 5th OF spot. If he wins the starting LF job outright i
dont think it bodes well for the Reds that Gomes and/or Dickerson
performed so poorly in Arizona that they lost thier job to a guy with
a low upside and 1/2 a year at AAA. But stuff happens.

I assume that if Heisey and Frazier had similar Springs that Frazier
would get the nod as a 4th or 5th outfielder over Chris because of his
versatility. It would be alot easier for Dusty to get him ample
playing time.

This being the Reds, we know that there will be alot of walking
wounded. Dickerson will probably miss 1/2 the year, and Rolen will be
day-to-day for 6 months. Even when "healthy", Rolen and Cabrera may
only garner 80% of the starts because of the necessity of keeping
those 2 old men reasonably fresh. Thats plenty of playing time for
somebody on that side of the infield.

Stubbs is the key to this team.

As per usual, this is all sheer speculation on my part.

My main problem with Baker is his stubbornness in particular staying
with starting pitchers too long. He is old and too comfortable in his
job. The Reds need a younger leader with more energy..

As far as keys to the club's success and any chance of them contending.
It hinges on three players in my opinion. Homer Bailey must become an
ace and win at least 15 games getting over his emotional tantrums he
has shown at times in the past. Scott Rolen needs to play 140 games and
hit 25 homeruns..

Last but not least Jay Bruce must get off the PGA tour and put away his
pitching wedge on low outside pitches. He must emerge from Adam Dunn
K-land and learn to be more disciplined at the plate. A .275 average
would be nice.....

You can fill in most of the spots on the 25-man already: Hernandez, Hanigan,
Votto, Phillips, Cabrera, Rolen, Stubbs, Bruce, Dickerson, Harang, Arroyo,
Cueto, Bailey, Cordero, Masset, Rhodes, Herrera are pretty much locks to make
the 25-man unless one of them gets hurt tripping over a rattlesnake in the
clubhouse - it is Arizona, after all - or there's another trade. That's 17 of
the 25. All they're figuring out at ST is who are the the fifth starter, the
rest of the outfielders and bullpen, and the infield backups. There's a lot of
guys in the mix for those last eight slots, including quite a few non-roster
invitees, but more 2/3 of the 25-man is almost certainly listed above.

As far as I'm concerned, the comment about plate discipline is valid for anybody
on the team except Joey Votto and Scott Rolen.

The last time the Reds had an old manager was the last time they had a
winning record. They fired him and he went on to win a World Series
with Florida. I don't think age is Dusty's problem, he's just not a
particularly gifted manager.
