The Mariners led Baltimore 5-1 going into the bottom of the 8th today.
King Felix had allowed just 5 hits and the one run. So the manager
pulls his ace for Brandon "Texas" League. League allowed 3 hits
including a solo HR and a grand slam and walked a guy and other hitter
swung at a wild pitch for strike three but reached base safely.

Typical managerial stupidity. Wakamatsu snatched defeat from the jaws
of victory. I love when that happens.

It is stupid. The pitch count is ruining baseball. Nolan Ryan does not like
it and baseball shouldn't either. Why take someone out that is going good
and give the opposing team a new life.

Especially when that someone is one of the best pitchers in baseball
and the next guy is a career mediocrity. Also Felix was just a bit
over 100 pitches. Any properly trained and conditioned starter should
be good for about 135 pitches over 9 innings. That is a modest 15 per
inning. As long as there aren't a couple of 30 to 40 pitch innings
mixed in with some 6 to 8 pitch inings, the workload is smooth and
very easily tolerable. Nolan Ryan certainly would agree.

And you say you don't want to flog the pitchers. 135 pitches as a
regular diet! wow! I knew you liked to flog the pitchers, but I really
did not understand how high you would go.

I doubt Nolan Ryan would agree. He may not be all that smart (I don't
know anything about his intelligence), but he obviously is not an
idiot. Why would you think that Nolan Ryan is an idiot? What really
stupid thing has he done to make you think that? He is president of
the club, and he has not ordered his manager to flog the starting
pitchers.

Gnork, you are always belittling the 3-run save, and maybe correctly
(at least I agree, for whatever that is worth to you). As you have
noted, almost any mediocrity can be expected to hold a 3-run lead for
an inning. Basically, the same goes for a 4-run lead with two innings
left. Why flog a great pitcher when a mediocrity can be expected 99%
of the time to get the job done? That the guy failed for Seattle is
not an indication that the move was wrong.

You have to judge moves before you know the outcome. Some good moves
turn out badly, and some bad moves turn out good. You used to know
this.

I still do. That was a very bad move. Seattle has been terrible and
with Hernandez continuing to pitch they had a 99.9% or so chance of
winning. I consistently favor letting the pitcher pitch when he is
doing well. If you note it was not a blanket 135 pitches is okay. Over
9 innings with a fairly even workload and a conditioned non straining
pitcher, it is very easy. Yes, it is. Now with an 11-1 lead after 7
innings and some schlup in the BP in need of work, go ahead and pull
your guy. Just don't do it for the hell of it. BTW congrats to Latos
of the Padres for his CG 1-0 win tonight. He also singled in the only
run of the game.
