OK, so what was his pitch profile for the game? Did he not have any
long innings? And even if a well-conditioned starter should be able to
throw 135 pitches, is he conditioned that way, that is, was he still
fresh or was he tired? Sorry to ask all these dumb questions, but all I
saw was the box score and wasn't ready to claim managerial stupidity.

Do you love it when Mr. Francona does it? <G> Not that I can recall him
doing it that badly of course.

It doesn't seem like Hernandez struggled in the 7th. A 14 pitch
inning where gave up two hits (one of the infield variety) and struck
out two.

I also looked to see if Brandon League needed work. This also did not
seem to be the case as the reliever had pitched two days earlier. In
fact that was League's 5th appearance in that week. He is currently
on a pace to pitch in 81 games and 95 innings.....both would be career
highs.

If anything the choice of League might be questioned. He did have a
nifty 1.86 ERA when he came into the game...... but he also had 3
blown saves and this was his third relief loss this year.

Still Wakamatsu should have had confidence that this game was in the
bag and that saving his 25 year old star pitcher an inning here or
there early in a long season had merit.....

.....or maybe he was thinking that if he got Hernandez hurt
unneccessarily they would be introducing him as "Don Wakamatsu the ex-
manager of the Seattle Mariners".

I still do. That was a very bad move. Seattle has been terrible and
with Hernandez continuing to pitch they had a 99.9% or so chance of
winning. I consistently favor letting the pitcher pitch when he is
doing well. If you note it was not a blanket 135 pitches is okay. Over
9 innings with a fairly even workload and a conditioned non straining
pitcher, it is very easy. Yes, it is. Now with an 11-1 lead after 7
innings and some schlup in the BP in need of work, go ahead and pull
your guy. Just don't do it for the hell of it. BTW congrats to Latos
of the Padres for his CG 1-0 win tonight. He also singled in the only
run of the game.

Bob Ryan warned about "creeping Lorussaism" in baseball management years

he and Billy Beane have been ruining baseball by overthinking it..
