yeah, who could forget offerman, the most famous of all time.

I disagree on dice-K. The RS figured, correctly, that whatever they
paid for the right to sign Matsuzaka would come out of the subsequent
player contract, so no sense in not bidding high to guarantee (or
nearly so) the win. And, despite this year of disappointment, Dice-K
was well worth his salary, including the pro rated share of the
signing fee.

I agree on Offerman. The contract was an oddity (well above perceived
market price), although he had a really good year in Boston for a 2d
baseman (OPS = .826), which was down from .841 in his last year with
the Royals. The signing reflected the early RS affection for a good
OBP (Jose got a lot of BBs) --- plus, of course, the "desperation" in
losing Mo Vaughn. But after Jose's first year in Boston, he was a dud.

Should be interesting. If NYY moves first, they will sign Holliday,
which then will kill the "inflated" market for Bay --- no one but NYY
would bid in that range for Bay. But the high price for Holliday will
also set the market for a v. good LF. The RS will probably stay in the
Holliday bidding, as they did with Teixiera, just to be sure that if
they lose him, NYY pays through the nose for him.

Do you think the NYY will re-sign Damon and Matsui? The Mariners look
like the most obvious choice for Matsui to continue his career in MLB
as a DH. But, Holliday will get his big payday, he rejected a very
gracious contract extension offer by the Rockies like Tex did with the
Rangers, so expect him to get at least $100 million.
