Knowing how Lackay reacts to bad breaks I don't blame Thoe.

It was the 9th and Delcarmen should not have been in the game. When your
team is not winning consistently, you have to go with your best, Bard or
Papelbon, and not somebody just off the DL. That said, obviously Paps didn't
do much to help the cause. Bad pitching and bad defense. I'll bet that
Lackey would have liked to stay in the game, but pitch counts are more
important these days than how effective a pitcher has been.

With a five run lead, you don't use your closer or your overworked
setup man. Delcarman had pitched well since coming back from the DL.

I would have taken him out one batter sooner, but if the defense
didn't mess up, no additional runs would have scored.

You can't use Bard every game.

Yes, Manny was the proper guy. But one batter sooner was my call at
the time. And the game plan for Bard HAS to be to use him less, not
more.

The "closer" role has some problms, as people on this ng have often
noted. But one virtue, often overlooked, is that there is a built in
system for controlling the overwhelming tendancy to use the top
reliever way, way too much. Happened to Goose (who survived it) and
happened to the Monster (who did not).

Well, there is no such built in system for protecting the setup man.
NYY invented the JOBA rules, mostly because of Joba Chamberlain's age.
Whatever, something is needed to keep the setup guy from getting 100
innings for the season. Not so big a risk with Francona --- huge with
Torre, who always wanted to go with the hot hand and went through
setup guys like crazy.l
