From: tom dunne on 11 Apr 2010 14:49 The Reds have managed three hits through six innings today off Tom Gorzelanny, and two of them are off the bat of rookie pitcher Mike Leake. After Leake's second hit, Stubbs replaced him via a fielder's choice, then steals second and third. Tying run on third with one out, but O-Cab and Votto follow with a K and a groundout. Welcome to the majors, Mike. Sorry you have to pitch for a team that can't score.
From: john smith on 11 Apr 2010 17:18 What is particularly alarming is the amount of times Votto and Stubbs have struck out through 6 games. Anybody have this total? Votto looks horrible and messed up at the plate right now. I expect him to straighten out as he is a proven commodity. Stubbs problem is he is trying to jack everything. Those first inning swings were from his heels. His minor-league K total was pretty high. One two in the order is going to kill this club all year round. WJ might just have to pull the trigger on getting a legitimate one or two hitter in here or contending may be a pipe dream. It is still early.

The guy that continues to impress me, and did all last year, is Gomes. All I see him do, is play consistent, sound baseball. He comes up in the bottom of the 8th today with a 1 run lead and the sacks full. He looks for something away, and drives the ball to right field, making sure to plate that insurance run. Things like that go unnoticed too often. Most of today's players would have swung from the heels in that situation. There has been some real sloppy play in these first six. Hopefully, they settle down a bit now. The kid, Leake battled for a nice big league debut.

I am pretty impressed already..I think the hitting will come around, at least as long as the pitching is good you will always be in the hunt...Way to early to change anything yet!

What impressed me about Leake today was his ability to paint both sides of the plate. He isn't going to blow people away but his ball sure does have significant ball movement. I even thought he got squeezed a few times by the home plate ump and to his credit he never showed his displeasure. Poise from a 22 year old guy is quite nice to see. He takes nothing for granted. I heard WJ say he was unloading the equipment truck in Arizona. Quite nice to be humble. Another bonus is his ability to work quickly, this Gibson like trait will benefit the defense immensely. I really like this guy and see no reason to rush Volquez back so quickly. Unlike last year the starting pitching depth seems to be for real. Talk to me after June 15 on that one. That time last year was when the pitching went south in a hurry. With all the young arms and people in this group showing their concerns for innings pitched, a six man rotation might not sound so far-fetched. But then again injuries always seem to straighten things out in the long run. Gomes is a very professional hitter and a hard nosed player. He is an asset to any team. One of my biggest concerns thus far is 1-2 in the order. I just don't see this as being a positive on this team. Another concern is this team's overall anxious approach at the plate. With the huge number of strikeouts this batting order has rung up so far, this approach could lead to prolonged losing streaks. I just don't see this team as a manufacturer of runs. The lack of speed and number of strikeouts by hitters is very disappointing through 6 games. The fundamentals must improve. Like Danny says, little things often go unnoticed by the casual fan but they can be really important. Especially at the major league level where the difference between winning and losing can be ever so thin! |
