From: sweet lou on 5 May 2010 09:03 The passing of the great Tiger broadcaster Ernie Harwell takes an old fart like me back to days of yesteryear. Some of you in fact probably many of you in this day of all games being televised have never listened to a radio broadcast of a game, As a young man in the backwoods of Maine summer nights meant an old Stromberg Carlsen radio and listening to far away radio stations and the voices of Red Barber and Harwell Dodgers, Mel Allen from hated Yankees, on occasion KMOX St Louis with Jack Buck, WWVA West Virginia had the Pirates with the great duo of Bob Prince and the old "Possum" Jim Wood and of course Braves and Sox games with Jim Britt and then Gowdy with Bob Murphy.During these times teams played many day games so when the Sox played during the day one of the above teams was playing at night thus it was then I listened to those far away voices. Many of the above voices are gone now and you can add the great Harwell to that list. In conclusion a story about Ernie. When old Briggs Field/Tiger Stadium was facing the destruction he was asked if he would salvage anything from the park? He related that he was going to take the urinal from the visitors clubhouse. Why? Because " every great player in the AL had used it".He did and took it home, cleaned it up and made a planter of it.RIP Ernie.

That's when announcers were an attraction rather than like today when most are just painful to listen to. And from all reports Harwell was also a very nice guy. Aside - I thought I was getting the Pirates on KDKA. And I still listen to most games on radio WTIC 1080 Hartford.

While at Ft Meade, MD, mid way twixt DC and Baltimore 74 to 80, when atmospheric conditions were right I could listen to WTIC with the great Ned Martin and the old "possum" Jim Wood.
