That player would be the _greatest_ hitter, by definition and without qualification. What you are trying to say is that Cobb was the greater hitter but qualified by fewer atbats. You could also say that Cobb was the greatest hitter qualified by the phrase, "of those who only faced white pitching." Or perhaps, "of those who played for the Detroit Tigers" or even more salient, "of those who never won a World Series." cordially, as always, rm |
