Heard some guys talking on the radio about how this was the most
anticipated Twins season ever. Of course, I disagreed. In my lifetime
the most anticipated Twins season for me was 1992. The Twins were
coming off a season where they were pretty much in first place for the
entire season, they beat the Blue Jays in the ACLS in 6 games then
played and won the best World Series I've ever seen (and many consider
the best in history. I don't know if I've ever mentioned this, but I
was at Game 7 and personally saw them win it. Chuck Knoblauch was
rookie of the year. Scott Erickson was 2nd in Cy Young voting. They
lost Jack Morris in the off season but added John Smiley. I figure
they were going to win back-to-back World Series. So 1992 was my most
anticipated Twins season. How about you?

1988: Twins had just won their first WS title. Everybody was returning
except Don Baylor. Season tickets were flying off the shelves.

2003: Twins had won 94 games in 2002 and had gone as far as the ALCS,
losing to the eventual World Champion Angels. Could they get to the
World Series in 2003?

2007: In 2006 Justin Morneau was MVP, Johan Santana was the Cy Young
winner, and Joe Mauer was the batting champion. Francisco Liriano was
filthy good in his rookie year, going 12-3 with a 2.16 ERA. Torii
Hunter had hit 31 HR; Michael Cuddyer hit 24. All the pieces were in
place for 2007.

You are scaring me, man. Honestly, I think '88 was the year I figured
they would do big things ('92 as well, but I remember being
particularly disappointed in 1988. Of course, the Twins did pretty
well that year, but what are you supposed to do when the A's win 104
games?) And you make a really important point that we all need to
keep in mind. Twins fans have always survived on knowing that the
team that looks best on paper quite often does not finish where one
might expect it to. Likewise for the team that looks mediocre on
paper.

As a Twins fan, I almost fear this season because I don't have much
familiarity with this idea of having such high expectations. And my
limited experience with the feeling has very often led to
disappointment.

Let the games begin.
