Assuming no cash is coming back, yes.

But he was DFA's so quickly that I think it likely they have something
worked out.

I wouldn't rule out a sale to a Japanese team for instance.

Three spots. Aaron Miles has a career WHIP of 1.00 as a pitcher, compared to
5.50 for Janish.

What? Really? Jocketty not only manages to remove the Taveras albatross from
around the club's neck by packaging him with Rosales, who didn't exactly set the
world on fire last year, he actually gets two players in return?

Plus, by dumping the salaries of taveras and Rosales, the payroll only goes up
by a chump change amount after signing Cabrera?

Yeah. Walt Jocketty, if you ARE reading this newsgroup - you rock, dude.

Miles' 2009 season was as disappointing as Taveras' was, but a lot of that was
probably injuries - first his shoulder and then his elbow. Miles can play
several positions. He did have a few good years in St. Louis before crashing
last year with the Cubs. He's a switch-hitter whose career splits are
respectable against both lefties and righties. He has playoff experience and a
WS ring with the Cardinals in '06. He runs the bases well. He will probably be a
useful backup, which Taveras probably was not going to be.

The player to be named...well, I'll go out on a limb and predict that WJ does
better with this one than the Reds did in the Chris Denorfia deal.

Nice to have a real GM in the chair.

The moment i hit the SEND button i had the sudden suspicion that i'd
misunderstood the math. i thought i'd seen that the Reds were sending
cash to the A's to compensate. Maybe not.

If he cant make up the money, Beanes essentially paid 1.3 mil +
rosales salary + a PTBNL for a backup player unlikely to be an upgrade
over the one he gave up.

He must have something up his sleeve.

I believe i misread as cash changing hands to make up the difference.
My bad.

I see no upgrade at all, unless Taveras was clearly in line to start.
It does make it a bit easier for Stubbs to hold onto the starters job.
Stubbs probably has to crater in ST to lose that job anyway.

I also dont see Cabrera as a likely upgrade over Janish.

Miles replaces Rosales who wasnt likely to make the club, or
contribute much anyway if he did. My estimation was that Janish and
Sutton and Frazier were the top 3 candidates for backup infielder
spots. Frazier is non-roster which contributes to him being least
likely of the 3 to get that job. Now Miles is almost garaunteed a
spot. So Janish or Sutton gets the other spot, meaning Miles took the
job of whomever gets cut. Not really much of an upgrade there if any
at all.

Now, if Walt had made the Taveras deal without signing Cabrera to
boot, then were really talking. He saves 2.9 mil which should make it
more possible to bring back Gomes or even talk seriously to Damon.
