They are throwing around names.

Ted Power
Mario Soto
Tom Browning

Browning has problems managing his own life......not interested.

Dave Duncan is supposedly on the outs with the organization.

If that's true and they can get him, go for it.

Otherwise, Carl Willis would me my close second choice. He pumped out a
couple of Cy Young winners.

The rumor I've heard, which is undoubtedly the same thing you have, is that
Duncan is unhappy with the Cardinals for the way they treated his son this
year. Who knows how much of that is true, but if it is true hey, get the
guy here.

Of course, with the developments of the past couple days it'll be
interesting to see how things work out. The whole John Smoltz/Bronson
Arroyo pine tar controversy has led to some interesting quotes from both
sides. Quotes such as:

"Baker said he didnt hear any complaints about Arroyo rubbing pine tar on
the balls until a writer told him Thursday morning.

"If anybody should know about that it would be (Cardinals pitching coach)
Dave Duncan and La Russa, maybe," said Baker. "I remember they had Julian
Tavarez over there and they threw his hat out of the game because it had
pine tar on it."

A lot of bad blood between the teams right now, and it could possibly spill
over into next season as the Reds and Cards play each other opening day.
If Duncan leaves the Cards and joins the Reds it could make the situation
all the more interesting.

Regardless though, Duncan obviously does something right. He time and
again takes guys who were average at best before and turns them into
ridiculously good pitchers. I mean, look what he did with Kyle Lohse last
year! And hell, even Chris Carpenter. In 6 seasons with Toronto he had a
4.83 ERA and a 1.510 WHIP. He comes to the Cards and in 6 years there he
has a 2.91 ERA, 1.074 WHIP and is winning Cy Young awards. What the hell?
If he could do that for the Reds, especially with the really talented young
guys we've got, it could be a huge boost to the team. We shall see.

There's more to it than that. He did voice his displeasure at the way the
Cardinals treated his son, but he is also pissed at the St. Louis media for the
way they handled that trade, and he's also recently blasted the Cardinals'
organization publicly because its minor league pitching philosophy is not in
line with what he and bullpen coach Marty Mason are doing at the major league
level. He's got no input with the developmental staff on pitching.

Anyway, I do think Dave Duncan is headed here next year. The question in my mind
is whether he's going to be the pitching coach, or the manager.

If Duncan can multi-task, I'll take him as both!!!!!
