I have been waiting for a while to post this, but I was never sure why
the Sox picked up Pierre. I realize I haven't seen him all that much,
but what I did see never impressed me. I saw him as less than average
in the NL and now....

From what my memory told me about Pierre is that he has superior
speed. The problem is that he obviously can't hit (not sure about
fielding either) - so what good is that if he can't get on base? I
also knew that giving up Podsednik was a BIG mistake. He came back -
on the cheap - last season and helped the team get back to some degree
of respectability. At least I'm glad (for his sake) that he's found a
good home with fan support/appreciation to where he can play everyday.
I could live with his errors since he found other ways to compensate
for his fielding deficiencies. But with Pierre, it appears like he
offers little to nothing - I hope I'm wrong.

You are. Pierre is a .300 hitter who averages 20 doubles a year
for his nine year major league CAREER.
Podsednik is a career .278 hitter that has only hit over .300 twice
in his career (and only barely at that . Once by .14 points once by
..04) Last year was a defensive all star year for Pods as his feilding
% was .992. His 3 seasons previous he was at or below .970 ( which is
HORRIBLE)
While Pierre won't make anyone forget Willie Mays in the field, his
fielding % is way better than Pods.
He is a better base stealer that Pods also 461 to 271 (With Pierre
only having 1 more year of service)

A major upgrade no matter how you look at it

Career SB%

Podsednik 75.6%

Career Fielding Percentage

Podsednik .985

Pretty similar overall.

Thank you Mark. I had also done the math on stolen base percentage and
you are very correct.
Interestingly Podsednik vs. Pierre lifetime in:
SLG PCT. .382 v. .371
Annual salary $1,650,000 v. $7,000,000

I wouldn't consider the significant difference in both salaries as
justifiable.
Pods also led us White Sox fans out from the wilderness of a never-
ending (it seems) World Series drought - it would never have happened
without him. He can also surprise fans with long ball potential - but
that's not normally his 'game'.
Lastly, Podsednik has always played with a lot of heart and team
spirit.
All that I can hope for is that Pierre exhibits the same degree of
dedication and loyalty, which makes me wonder why Pierre played only
one year with the Cubs.
