From: powrwrap on 5 Feb 2010 09:33 ORLANDO HUDSON! YES! No more Lil Nicky Punto starting most games. The Twins roster looks a lot different from last year. The Twins payroll looks a lot different from last year. Here are guys that the Twins have on the roster that they didn't have last year at this time: Carl Pavano Jim Thome Orlando Hudson J.J. Hardy Jon Rauch Clay Condrey and let's not forget Pat Neshek That's a lot of turnover in personnel. With Hardy and Hudson in place in the middle infield, it seems incredible that this franchise went into last season with Punto and Casilla manning these positions. Talk about an upgrade in 2010! The Twins payroll has gone from $65M to $96M, a 47.7% increase. I wonder if that is some sort of a record for percentage payroll increase.

I think the record goes to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, who increased payroll 82% for the 2008 season (and made it to the WS). Yeah, they only went from $24M base up to $44M, but it is a large percentage increase. Also, that same year, there were the Tigers who added $42M to their payroll, or 44.7%--and lost 18 more game than the previous year. So the Twins have increased their payroll by a higher percent than the Tigers.

And we haven't yet figured in anything extra for the catcher, which, I guess, makes it more likely that Mauer's deal will be an extension, and not something that reworks his '10 salary. Even so, I am really surprised at the moves this team is making. There are, of course, no guarantees, but I really think Mr. Smith is shooting for a WS title. Anyway, unless something really bad happens (look at the '08 Tigers) the division title should really happen. brianj
