You've got to punch their lights out. The Steelers? They are tough. Always have been, always will be. Win or lose, they hit, and they hit hard. And Pete Rose belongs in the Hall of Fame."

So tough, he refused to ever apologize to Stingley, instead preferring to try to wring as much money out of that one hit as possible. I'm glad he suffered with diabetes and a shitload of other ailments before he croaked. A heart attack would of been too quick of a death for him.
From: tsp on 29 Jul 2010 13:05 The QB should have apologized for running that play! Over the middle, pass overthrown so Stingley was stretched out when he was hit - legally. Tatum was just doing his job, which he did well at all times during his career.

He made the hit he was taught to make, a hit that _usually_ wouldn't have resulted in serious injury. It was the same hit coaches taught us all to make when we were kids, although the players involved wouldn't be moving as fast, the amount of force applied would not be as large. If that his was some sort of crime then football should be outlawed. There are arguments for that but it's another issue. -- Will in New Haven Pete Rose is not getting into the Hall of Fame until he is dead. The Steelers are overrated.

Although he refused to apologize to Stingley, he still wanted to meet with him, but Stingley and his family didn't see the need, and so turned down Tatum's request. Tatum later became a recluse, his guilt eventually overwhelmed him. Sometimes you can be too tough for your own good. |
