I think they "only" won 97 to take best record in the NL (and only played 161 reg. season games). Still, your point is entirely valid. You never know. And the Cubbies are down 0-2 to a team that only had 84 wins and was barely over .500. I think that there's something to be said for not locking up your division too early. Flipside, given a choice, I don't think that you want to wait until the last second to lock things up. (Just look at the White Sox and Brewers.) The Sox have been rather fortunate, I think, in locking up their playoff spots in 04 and 07 (and 08) with only about a week or so left, so that they had just enough time to set their rotation and get a little rest, without losing their edge.

Colorado was dead in the WS after the long layoff, but that is the extreme. Anyway, it does seem that playing on the edge is useful in getting ready for the playoffs. I think it also helps not to have a big disappointment at the end --- losing the division and settling for the WC. For the RS, that happened a week or so before the end of the season. Last year, NYY seemed to have a let down from missing the division. I'm not as sure of the importance of lining up the pitching, but having some good pitchers rested is a big deal --- crazy IMHO to run CC out there on 3-day rest after 5 or so games on 3-day rest. RS actualy did not have its pitching lined up --- Beckett clearly would have started if he had been fully healthy.

What a surprise that this clutch HR comes from a guy who has played, what 2 games in the past 2 months! A guy with a heriated disk! I have to admit, I thought Franconna was wrong to even be starting Drew. I thought, under the circumstances, it would be better to start Crisp, who has been hitting well lately. Up 2 - 0 and brining the show to Fenway. Nice!! ~Randy~
