Thanks to a nudge from the redoubtable Mr. Soames I looked up the EqA
ratings for major league players. I filtered my search to show only
those with 300 or more plate appearances so only players with
significant playing time would show.

There were 274 players with 300 or more PA in 2009. Not surprisingly
Albert Pujols and Joe Mauer wer number 1 and number 2 by significant
margins. Here are the Red Sox on the list:

17 Youkilis
35 Bay
52 Drew
89 Scutaro (with Toronto)
109 Pedroia
135 Ellsbury
148 Lowell
165 Ortiz
249 Varitek (would be worst on an after May list)
267 Green

A few others of interest:
241 Beltre (please DO NOT sign him)
262 Renteria (paying for lousy shortstops all over baseball)
274 D. Navarro (don't wonder why Tampa got another catcher)

Here is the EqA formula. It is a poor mans OPS <g>:

H + TB + 1.5*(BB + HBP) + SB
EqA = ----------------------------
AB + BB + HBP + CS + SB/3
