At one time.....A long time ago....Jim Bowden was looked on as a bit of
a young wunderkind for perennially competing with an underbudget
franchise. Of course after a bit, Bowden came to overpursue his early
successes with more and more extravagant attempts to build a pitching
staff by dumpster diving and corralling all the five tool guys he could
get his hands on.

Then he moved to Washington and became the punchline of countless jokes.

I wonder if Beane may be going through "GM" midlife?

Nothing against Adam Rosales who did project to be a better player than
he showed at GAB, he's still not gonna be good to the point that you put
that kind of effort and cash into him. Chris Sabo is the top end of what
you might get.

Beane would take the pre-injury Sabo right now. We're talking 616
games
of 115 OPS+ (with some useful speed thrown in)

I think that Sabo is an awfully optimistic target. Dan projected him
at .244/.301/.414 going into last season.

I do too.

Sabo is my poster child for a guy who comes up old has a couple of good
season and then seemingly vanishes before his time.

Just fwiw, What injury divides Sabo's career into pre and post injury
periods? I know my memory is bad.

.....

Rosales has wheels. He's not as stupid a baserunner as Sabo was, but he
does the "remind the crowd of Rose" stunts.

Rosales hit much better in the minors than his major league numbers
would indicate. Where Sabo got better when he hit the majors, Rosales
has crashed.

Sabo like to use corked bats, another cheater......He was the epitome of
mediocrity and shortness in a career. A scrappy player, a wanna bee Pete
Rose who just never had that kind of talent. Probably just a tad short
of Ray Knight and an inch above Aaron Boone..

The Reds have had scores of these kind of players. Although Sabo won a
World Series, these kind of guys never win with any kind of frequency...

These kind of players play about 5- 8 years having two or three very
good seasons. Nothing to write home about......Players the Reds seem to
have collected over the past 30 years to no avail.........
