Back in the 70's, I worked in the deli department of a supermarket in
Hackensack, N.J. One day, while taking and filling orders, I looked
up and saw that I was waiting on the great Elston Howard. I didn't
want to bother him, so I gave no indication I recognized him and just
filled the order. Things I remember about him: he was a great
defensive catcher who caught with one hand to protect his throwing
hand. He was so savvy that he could generally tell if a foul ball was
going out of play or not, so he saved himself a pointless run back to
the fence. And, of course, he was a great clutch hitter.
Unfortunately, he died young. RIP.
