Here's the other hot topic with the Reds. Dickerson's comments that
he deserves a shot at the CF job and Baker's usual silly
rationalizations.

Dickerson is the idiot here. Just shut up and play.

Does he really think that Stubbs is a lock to start in
Center?

If that's any sample of Dickerson's attitude then Stubbs probably is!

Dickerson ran his mouth to C. Trent in an interview, that's a no-no, you don't
take a beef to the press especially when you haven't even talked to your manager
about it yet.

As for Dusty's "silly rationalizations" (RJA!), he mentioned Dickerson's injury
history. There's nothing silly about that. Dickerson missed the last 10 games of
the 2008 season with an injured achilles tendon, and missed time in 2009 because
of a head injury (3 games), then a shoulder injury (14 games), then an ankle
injury (34 games). I'm pretty sure he had injury problems when he was in the
minors as well. This is Chris Dickerson, not Eric Davis. If he can't stay on the
field, somebody else is gonna take his job. Wally Pipp was a good player too.

By silly rationalizations I mean the talk about who hit more home runs
being a factor in who plays. If you look at what this team got out of
their 1 and 2 hitters in terms of reaching base (bottom of the
league), a smart manager would value a guy with a lifetime .383, at
least while he's not on the DL.

If you saw the article I linked to the other day, Dusty's rationale
for batting Phillips at cleanup is because of his speed, so he can
threaten to steal ahead of Rolen. Using homers as a factor with your
leadoff hitter is just as appropriate :)

In truth, I think Dusty makes his decisions largely as a combination
of what's traditionally done and whatever his intuition says on the
matter. He really doesn't care about numbers (for good or ill), and
it's only when reporters ask him about his decisions that he attempts
to rationalize with stats. That's why we hear about leadoff homers
and cleanup steals, because those sorts of concrete answers get
reporters off his back, even when they don't make good baseball sense.
