Then the loutish Al Hrabosky reminded me of Luddy's numbers against the Mutts starter. I fear now that nothing will happen regarding Oswalt. Tom ______________ HardBall Talk says Philadelphia is close to a deal, but they might want Oswalt to drop his 2012 option for $16M. Philly fans seem to be wary that Jason Werth might be part of the package. Halladay, Hamels, Oswalt - pretty good 1-3 there. AJM

Scary good. Tom ____________ Again, if the Cards do nothing to improve the rotation (which now seems highly unlikely) unless Lohse comes back and pitches well, I don't think they will make the playoffs. If any of Carpenter, Wainwright or Garcia loses a game, that means they will likely lose 3 of 5 almost all the time. Suppan, sure he's a nice guy, but he just can't get major league hitters out anymore. Hawksworth isn't showing the ability to be a starter either. There really aren't any other options. What ever happened to Rich Hill? And I am assuming Penny is done for the year, and as a Cardinal. AJM

I believe Hill was released earlier this year, if not right out of spring training. For a big dude is supposedly good shape, Penny went down hard and fast and has been slow to heal. If he had the same scuples as Trever Miller, he would offer to come back next year for the league minimum salary. Mozeliak will feel the wrath of the fans if he fails to pull off a decent deal. Tom
