From: RJA on 4 Aug 2010 09:33 This guy really went into the crapper after June. On July 2nd: .283/.356/.476, 10 HR 36 RBI July: .200/.245/.264 August: .083/.083/.083 What the hell happened? Confidence? Pressure? Both? Might not be a bad idea to send him down to right the ship and bring Dickerson back. He's tearing the cover off of the ball down in AAA.

Early in the year it was a pretty obvious move to get Drew Stubbs out of the leadoff slot. When that happened the team took a leap forwards. Both Stubbs and Drew have just been atrocious at the plate during July and August. Heisey and Dickerson have looked spectacular. You don't want to break the spirit of your young guys, but send them down NOW when they have a chance to decompress they might be back and ready for September. It's an obvious thing to do and it will make the team better right now. dfs

Agreed - I think the worse he hits, the harder he tries, and the harder he tries, the worse he hits. Batting averages fluctate all the time, but his power outage really looks like something's going wrong with him. Flipping him for Dickerson makes sense in the short term (along with Stubbs sitting for Heisey.) I'm sure everyone here knows, but I think it's important to remember that at Bruce's age, Joey Votto hadn't even made his MLB debut. There's plenty of time for Bruce to come around, though I'd rather he not work it out mid-pennant race.

He had appeared to be making great progress over last year through June, then the wheels came off. I agree he's 23 and should figure it out. Heisey and Nix are both in today's lineup. Bruce and Stubbs are not.

Lack of self-confidence (or overconfidence) and the inability to handle pressure both point towards mental or personality defects, I tend to stay away from theories that regard the inner workings of somebodys mind, especially at this level. My current theories are: 1) mechanics are messed up I dont know and i'm no expert. I assume jacoby is looking at tape. Its his responsibilty to help Bruce avoid consistent irrwegularities that may creep into his hitting mechanics. I read stuff all the time from players saying "i've been in a funk for so long, i couldnt understand it, then i saw something on the video...". 2) injured, and unaware or hiding it messes up mechanics when we conciously or subconciously alter our mechanics to avoid discomfort 3) simply tired He's played alot. Maybe he's out all night too? I dont have no idea how he spends time away from the park. This would mess him up both mentally and physically. We all learn at some point in our 20's that we can no longer burn the candle so quickly, and we require full nights of rest. |
