Actually I don't know that anybody here has brought up one of Dusty's
craziest recent quotes.

"Yonder would make a great catcher."

The media is having a field day. Sometimes, this stuff just writes itself.

OK. I didn't follow that link. All I ever see that guy do in here is try to push
his blog and I don't think he's ever actually contributed anything else to a
discussion here other than to spam us with his URL.

However...I guess I'm crazy too, because I said in the "What's Wrong With Dusty"
thread, "I wonder if anybody in the organization has considered getting Bench,
or somebody, to teach Alonso to be a catcher. He's the perfect size for a
catcher, it would solve the problem of him being blocked by Votto at 1B, and the
Reds would have a lefty-hitting catcher with good contact and some pop."

It may not be as crazy as it sounds. The Mets are trying it with J.R. Murphy,
their second pick in the 2009 draft who played 3B and OF for much of his amateur
career. The Astros did it with Roger Clemens' son Koby in 2008. The Indians did
it with one of their elite prospects, Carlos Santana. There are others now, and
there have been others in the past. One of the best left-handed hitting catchers
in major league history, John Roseboro, was a third baseman as an amateur who
was converted to catcher in the minors.

The idea may be more wishful thinking than anything else - I haven't seen
anywhere near enough of Alonso to know if he has the athleticism to make this
kind of transition. Still, you have to admit, if it worked out, it would
certainly be better than Votto having to be either switched to LF or be dangled
as trade bait. Catcher is a hole right now. This could fill that hole.

If he's not athletic enough to make the transition to left field (and the
organization has insisted since day 1 that he can't do that)....what's the
chance that he'll make it at catcher.

Lip service from management has insisted that they are willing to take an
offensive hit in order to get decent defense on the field at certain
positions. I know that I shouldn't trust what front offices say, but I do.

I know, we've got a great hitting young prospect,....let's fart around with
his position instead of letting him develop.
