From: David Short on 13 Dec 2009 14:20 "Jim Bowden, the Reds' general manager, declined to discuss the Yankees' involvement, but an official familiar with the Wells talks said Steinbrenner called Bowden Saturday night and offered pitcher Mariano Rivera and catcher Jorge Posada. Bowden, looking to cut his payroll, obviously decided he preferred Goodwin, a 23-year-old left-handed hitter, who in 87 games with the Orioles last season batted .263 and had 22 stolen bases in 26 attempts. " Ouch. Just Ouch. From the Baseball Primer Back in 1995 the Reds dumped Daved Wells salary for a useless Oriol minor league centerfieler Curits Goodwin. Apparently the Yankees made a different offer. Imagine the difference if the reds had taken that offer. Jus Ouch.

It was also linked this morning on Redleg Nation http://www.nytimes.com/1995/12/27/sports/pro-baseball-the-rich-get-richer-as-orioles-get-wells.html?scp=1&sq=Rivera&st=nyt At that point, Rivera was a struggling starter being converted to setup man, and Posada put up an uninspiring .255/.350/.435 line at AAA. Who knew. Would they have put up similar career numbers had they been dealt to the Reds? I'm going to speculate that they wouldnt come close. The Reds would probably have spent several seasons fixated on keeping Rivera in the rotation. Maybe he pans out, maybe not. Both players, whether they had been succesful or not would probably have been gone by 2001. Steinbrenner = stupid when it comes to players.
