The Giants are now where they haven't been in over seven years ... 15
games over .500! They have pitching, they've got pitching, all they
need is a healthy bullpen.

But they don't have Bowker in the organization anymore.

How could Sabean deal him away so cheaply?

Because they desperately needed a left handed bullpen arm and Bowker is
a AAAA player. You're valuing Bowker much higher than he's worth
because you seen him be very successful in Fresno, but he's had his
chances at the MLB level and he's not that good.

Sure, I would have traded Joe Martinez for Will Ohman instead and kept
Bowker for OF depth, but the Orioles may think the Florida guy is a
better prospect than Martinez and that trade wasn't doable for the Giants.

Here are Andres Torres's ML stats.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/t/torrean02.shtml

Look how many major league organizations let him get away because he
wasn't very good.

I don't know what Torres's minor league stats were, but I doubt that
they were as good as Bowker's.

Bowker may or may not some day break through on the major league
level, but it's hard to believe that the winner of the 2009 MiLBY
isn't worth more on the trading market than a portion of a journeyman
reliever.

Tell me what Bowker's done in San Francisco vs. down in Fresno? He's
had all the potential and never really actualized it when he came up
from Fresno.

He routinely chewed up AAA pitching, but had problems with pitching in
the majors. That he was hitting well in Fresno this season was no
surprise, so it made him very attractive trade bait.

Anyway, if didn't make the trade, people would gut him for it, so he's
damned that he did and he'll be damned for it for more than one
reason. :)
