From: Wayback1918 on 3 Jul 2010 07:36 Clearly the Red Sox are in "Hold on" mode until some of their key players get back. In spite of the win last night, that was a line up with a lot of holes in it. The team defense which had been getting better and better has taken some heavy hits. (although Kevin Cash might be the best defensive catcher they have had so far this year) At least the schedule offers some hope. The three teams they face until the 'All-Popular Game' have 3 of the 4 worst records in the Amercian league over the last 30 games Two more at home (with favorable pitching match ups) vs the Orioles who are 9-21 in their last 30. Three at Tampa who is 13-17 in their last 30. Hopefully Buchholz can pitch Tuesday and pitch effectively. And finally three vs the Jays who are 12-18 in the same stretch. Lester and Lackey do pitch two of those three games. One concern in the team's current battered state is how they will fair against LHP. Martinez and Varitek both were crushing southpaws and Ortiz (.627) and Drew (.518) really struggle in that split. There are 3 lefties (Matusz, Price and Romero) scheduled to start in the next 8 games. I see the key being the next two games vs Baltimore. They really become very important...much more than two games in July with the O's normally would be. If they can win these two....and they really should....and go 3-3 in the final two series they should be in very good shape starting the second half of the season. 5-3 is certainly achievable with Lester and Lackey starting 4 of the games and Buchholz hopefully one more.
