You're killing me John!!! :o ) Wow, Bake McBride - oh those memories.
I remember him telling me "Let me check out that catchers mitt." I was
happy to oblige as a sixth grader. Man, could he fly!

Like I said earlier, I'm going to "fuel my tank" by taking a peekskie
at the late 60 early 70's lineups. I really think this is the first
time where I am no doubt aware of my slippage of players....and of all
places....why not usenet I suppose. Lord, what is it going to be like
in another ten years? I'll probably be so embarrased I'll never post
again in this group or in response to questions like this. :-(

Dude, you have to throw in Charlie Finley's Oakland A's. Damn those
A's in 1972!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"Tenace the Menace" - Gene Tenace - who probably hit no higher than .
220 in the regular season single handedly slapped the Big Red Machine
upside their heads in the 1972 World Series.

Vida "The Blue" Blazer - he was hurt and didn't pitch in the 72 World
Series if I remember right (along with Reggie Jackson) and a few years
later when the Reds tried to add him as the final piece of the
puzzle....the Commish Bowie Kuhn said "Nah Baby Nah"....it ain't gonna
happen Cincinnati...like the Reds were trying to corner the market or
something. If it would have been the Yankees though - it would have
been different IMO.

Jim "Catfish" Hunter : RIP - - - - - I remember the 76 World Series
in the Nati' and it was VERY cold and the Reds hung a loss on the
"Catfish" in extra innings if I remember correctly. Heckuva pitcher
and competitor.

John " Blue Moon" Odom : Heckuva pitcher, could bring the gas for
Oakland and was often employed as a pinch runner because of his
blazing speed.. If I remember right, game number 2? of the 72 WS - a
foul ball was hit in the big foul territory area at Oakland on the
first base side in the bottom of the ninth. Both Perez and Morgan
along with the RF ( can't remember) converged on the ball and Odom
tagged up at third base. While Odom was standing at 3B tagging up to
score - Joe caught the ball to his glove side and in the process of
spinning around too deal to the plate - he slipped and went down to
one knee and popped up and whirled around and delivered a strike to
Johnny Bench who completely mauled Odom and the closest Blue Moon got
to home plate was a big plate of pasta in the locker room after the
game.<heh>

And a few other "out of the ordinary names" such as Sal Bando the 3B /
Bert "Campy" Campaneris SS

You' might finish close to the basement with this bunch, because I picked them
based on the nicknames and not necessarily on their ability, but here's mine:

2B - Charley Hustle
1B - Dr. Strangeglove
DH - Crime Dog
LF - The Human Rain Delay
RF - Pops
CF - Junior
3B - The Vacuum Cleaner
SS - The Wizard Of Oz
C - The Wall and Yogi
SP - Dr. K, Catfish, Dizzy, Daffy, and Dominican Dandy
RP - The Mad Hungarian, Goose, Wild Thing, Coco, and The Octopus
Bench - Pronk, Crab, Ducky, Crash Test Dummy, and The Hebrew Hammer

I'll have yuou guys know that it just kills me to have to leave Oil Can off my
pitching staff.

And finally...back in the 1800's there was an infielder named Bob Ferguson who
is credited with being the first guy in history to switch-hit and whose
defensive greatness was such that they dubbed him "Death To Flying Things."
Ferguson managed eight different teams in the National Association (in which he
also umpired 804 games and also served as league president), the American
Association, and the National League before he died of apoplexy at age 49, so
I'll make Death To Flying Things my field manager!
