Red recently that the nickname came from a brooklyn accent. That Paul
and Loyd were being referred to as Big and Little Person and the accent
was so thick that out came....poison. They latched onto it and that
became there nickname.

Don't know the truth of the matter. In baseball sense poison works great.

I did know young threw hard, but I figured Cy was short for Cyrus.

Learn something new every day. I just try and make sure that it's
something I haven't learned before.

In case that's too cryptic. Donlin was a really good
player who:

a) liked to drink

b) was known for doing incredibly stupid things while
drunk. Like picking fights with cops or ...
well he'd try to fight anybody. Nearly did time
for a few of his stunts. Did do time after punching
an actress.

Many dangerous and distinctly less than funny pranks
(all while drunk). Hall of fame talent but wilder
than Pacman Jones.

His name (as you probably know now) was Denton True Young

More Young facts:

Young was a very unusual player for his day (or any
other for that matter). He was a jogger decades before Jim Fixx
born. In fact he worked out like nobody in the game: Young on
conditioning.

"My arm would get weak and tired at times, but never sore." Young
said, "I credit it to my legs and my off-season conditioning.

"I ran regularly to keep my legs in shape. In the spring I'd run
constantly for three weeks before I ever threw a ball. And I worked
hard all winter on my farm, from sunup to sundown. [...} Swinging
an axe hardens the hands and builds up the shoulders and back."

In addition he had his six "Rules for Pitching Success"

[Rule 2] Cultivate good habits: Let liquor severely alone, fight
shy of cigarettes, and be moderate of tobacco, coffee and tea [...]
A player should try to get along without any stimulants at all:
Water, pure, cool water is enough for any man.

[Rule 3] A man who is not willing to work from dewy morn until
weary eve should not think about becoming a pitcher.
