Mmmmm....chocolate, my favorite! I somehow failed to notice when I wrote the above that Kyle Lohse was starting for the Cardinals. So with the scored tied at 1-1 heading into the top of the fourth, Pedro Feliz singles to left, goes to second as Humberto Quintero reaches on Brendon Ryan's fielding error. That was one of two errors Ryan had in the game, and this was his second two-error game in a row. I had to look twice to be sure it wasn't Felipe Lopez. Ryan's gone 0-for-5 in the two games besides and is now hitting .173 - Lopez has been on the DL since April 25 with a strained ligament in his right elbow and isn't expected back until at least Monday. So anyway, Lohse fans Manzella, Wandy Rodriguez hits a fielder's choice grounder and they force Feliz at third for out number two, Bourn singles to load the bases, and who's at the plate? Why, none other than former Red Jeff Keppinger. Tell me the Reds couldn't have used this guy last year when they used eight different guys at third base and five at shortstop. So Keppinger, still helping out the Reds even though he's now wearing an Astro's uniform, goes to left for a three-run double. Then Berkman (who else?) hits a two-run homer to make it 6-1. Lohse, still helping out the Reds even though he's now wearing a Cardinals uniform, surrendered another run in the fifth and two more in the sixth, and the Astros went on to beat the Cardinals, 9-6, thus insuring their first-ever series win at the new Busch - they also beat the Cardinals on Tuesday, 6-3, and can now do no worse than take two out of three in the series. As of this moment, the Reds stand just a single game behind the Cardinals in the NL Central standings, and guess who's coming to dinner, er, I mean to GABP, on Friday? The Cardinals, who have now lost 6 of their last 10 while the Reds (don't look now) are the hottest team in the major leagues with a five-game winning streak. Guys, it doesn't get any better than this, unless this is the final series of the regular season with a playoff berth on the line. Which it isn't. But the Reds have a chance to make a statement this weekend...and an opportunity to climb into the driver's seat in the division race. If you're not getting at least a little excited about this upcoming series, you'd better find an EMT and have her check to see if you still have a pulse. JK

They'll all have 4 days of rest.

They beat up on the pirates in may and the cardinals had a tough stretch. I'll pay attention this weekend in the way that I always do, but I'm not really interested. We'll talk about that in July. dfs

I guess one of the things to keep an eye on is how many innings Leake has under his belt by then. I'm pretty sure I've read that he's going to be limited to around 150-165 this year (Chapman as well). It's going to be a tough sell shutting him down if we're still hanging around in August/September.

I've written that should be a goal for the reds, but I don't think I've EVER seen anybody with the club say something like that. If I'm wrong and somebody has a quote from a club official acknowledging that limiting Leake and Chapmans innings pitches would be a good thing for the franchise long term....please share the quote with me. It would represent a real sea-change in the way they operate. dfs |
