Well it might be a little different from last year at this time and
most recently the last 20 games have you thinking it just might be fun
this year!

The defense has been much better. If Scott Rolen doesn't hit another
homerun all year, just his presence on and off the field is worth him
being here. It is such a pleasure not to hold your breath every time a
ball is hit at the third basemen. The guy makes all the plays and has
had a big influence on Votto. Rolen is truly an example of how to play
the game the right way.

The base running has been upgraded tremendously. They are no longer a
station to station team. I have seen many guys go first to third
aggressively this year. Another Rolen influence. I have also seen many
guys sprint around the bases on homeruns, class way to play the game..
Votto has taken Rolen's lead very nicely.

Starting pitchers now have to worry about their respective jobs. With
Chapman just a phone call away, these starters now have to bare down
every time...Because their job is on the line every time they go out
there. Competition breeds better performances. Competition sure has the
catchers performing well. But even with this I see a sincerity about
rooting for the other guy with Hanigan and Hernandez. Hernandez was all
smiles after Bailey's performance and embraced Hanigan as well. The
team seems to be tighter this year and if we can just eliminate that
occasional "me play" from Phillips this cohesion could be special.

The 7 and 8 hitters are no longer automatic outs and this helps the
deficiency at the lead-off position. However, the lead off position is
still their biggest problem. I really believe Heisy deserves at least a
week of starts to see if he can be the guy.

Big test coming verse St.Louis. I don't think they will have much
advantage in pitching match-ups this weekend but good teams seem to find
a way to win these type games more often than not. At least the bullpen
is rested and ready to go.

The team is moving in a positive direction. We can only hope it
continues to take the baby steps and progress slowly....

One last thing, at the beginning of the year I said Jay Bruce and Homer
Bailey would be the key to this team's success. I stand by this still!
Jay Bruce has really turned the corner and no longer chases bad balls
the way he used to. He has hit many balls hard. Now if this guy really
wants to take another big step and become an elite hitter, he must start
taking some balls the other way with authority. When Mr. Bruce does
this, the sky will be the limit. His maturation and pitch recognition
has been great...

Mr. Bailey performed well today because he didn't nibble. He had
confidence to go right after hitters. If he can take off now, the Reds
will avoid the long losing streaks of the past............

The Reds are 44-22 when Rolen is in the lineup since he arrived last
summer. That's .667. Not exactly a small sample. Wonder how that
would compare to EE in the lineup. I see he's having another stellar
start at the plate. That deal was so worth it thus far.

When does Phillips take his lead?

I dont think youre giving enough credit to last seasons defensive
squad. Every analysis i saw after the season had the Reds as one of
the most improved teams defensively. I know that there are some folks
in here that love Keppinger, but when you replace him at SS with
Gonzalez and Janish, the defense imrpoves dramatically at that spot.
Similarly, replacing Dunn and Griffey in the outfield with almost
anybody is an upgrade too.
