From: powrwrap on 24 Oct 2007 12:23 Anybody catch this last night? In an hour long show that could have been compressed to 1/2 hour or so, ESPN declared the winners of the best "web gems" or most awesome fielding plays in baseball for 2007. Nick Punto's play on the Indians Garko was #4 overall. If you recall, Punto was playing a deep 2B, ranged to his right and into short center field on a high hopper by Garko, leaped up caught the ball bare- handed, and while still airborne and falling backward, threw the ball to Morneau, one-bouncing it to nail a stunned Garko. Near the end of the show they had a feature segment on Punto. They showed Punto's play as a 2B when he went horizontal while running in toward the pitcher's mound, grabbed the ball bare-handed and shoveled the ball submarine style to Morneau, all in one motion. Also showed the hard hit, one-bouncer that Punto, as SS, charged and grabbed bare-handed and threw in one fluid motion to get the runner at 1B. Finally, they showed his leap against the Twins dugout facing to snare a foul pop-up at the Dome (as 3B-man). Torii Hunter won the wall-banger category with his catch at Fenway and I think this catch was #10 overall. BTW, I thought Curtis Granderson's extended run out to left-center and robbing of a home run on a sno-cone style catch should have been the #1 web gem of 2007.
